Often times called "The Edge of America" by its residents, Folly Beach is a picturesque barrier island stretching six miles along the South Carolina coast. The island was named after its coastline, which was once densely packed with trees and undergrowth, as the Old English name for such an area was "Folly."
Here, warm ocean breezes along sandy beaches turn annual vacationers into long-time residents. If you're looking for a family-oriented vacation destination where the pace is slow and the activities are abundant, consider the wide array of Folly Beach rentals.
Take advantage of the year-round surfing, swimming, or fishing. Kayak and paddle board down the Folly River for marsh views, and a close up look at the ecosystem. Dolphins are a very common sight to see surfacing and splashing in the river and the ocean. Walk along the 1,045-foot Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier, where bird-watching and fishing, as well as breathtaking views, are available. The pier is the second longest pier on the East Coast.
Folly Beach is also home to the Morris Island Lighthouse, first built in 1767 before being destroyed during the Civil War. There is a grassroots effort to restore the lighthouse by stabilizing it and controlling the erosion. The beach in this area is perfect for an afternoon stroll, very scenic, Instagram-worthy, and great for shelling.
Located only 11 miles to the south, Folly Beach is the closest beach to downtown Charleston where the city is bustling with history, tours, high-end shopping, markets, and world-class restaurants. Take a walk down the historic waterfront area at Waterfront Park, The Battery, and see Rainbow Row. Charleston was voted the #1 city in the U.S. again by readers of Travel + Leisureā¦for the 6th consecutive year!
